Ellsworth Public Library

The Ellsworth Public Library is entering a new chapter — one rooted in reflection, connection, and growth. Alongside the remodel/renovation of our historic building, we’ve been engaged in a thoughtful process to clarify our identity and strengthen how we represent our values to the public. This rebrand is not just a new look; it’s an evolution that honors our history while embracing the future of our library and the community it serves. We’re excited to share this journey with you for the first time.

Design Options are currently on display at the library or below. Please take a moment to give us your feedback below or at the library. The survey will close on November 29.

Preparation

Since October 2024, we’ve been preparing for the creation phase of our rebrand. Throughout this process, we held monthly meetings with library management and board representatives while also gathering input from our entire team. We explored the needs and perspectives of our current patrons and those we hope to connect with in the future, and we even spoke directly with some of you to hear your thoughts firsthand. You can view a version of the Design Brief we shared with shortlisted designers here.

This spring, we began the search for the right design partner. We reached out to local designers, established agencies, and emerging talent, including recent UMaine graduates. After careful consideration of three finalists, we made our selection and are excited to move forward with our chosen partner: Portland Design Company.

Goals of the Rebrand

The goal of the rebrand is to strengthen a cohesive, flexible, and accessible visual identity that honors the library’s mission and community-centered values, while preparing EPL for growth and connection with both current and future audiences.

  1. This rebrand will equip us with a new logo suite complete with ownership of our visual assets.
  2. We are undergoing the rebrand to meet today’s communication needs and create a strong, consistent presence across different channels. The new visual assets will reflect who we are today, and where we’re headed.
  3. One of the reasons we chose Portland Design Company is their focus on timeless designs.
  4. Another important reason why we decided to partner with Portland Design Company is their strong track record of working with municipalities and their focus on accessibility. Their expertise in inclusive design and WCAG 2.0 Level AA conformance stood out to us.

Our brand refresh is just one part of a bigger evolution as we continue to grow and meet our community’s changing needs (also see the community survey we conducted in 2024). The refreshed look is the visual aspect of that change, while the renovation is the structural piece that will help bring it all to life. Both projects address important practical needs in their own way.

The new visual assets will reflect who we are today, and where we’re headed.

Funding For This Project

The rebrand is funded entirely through undesignated donations from the community that the EPL Board of Trustees dedicated to strengthening marketing and communications.
